Information

The most important element for wonderful Shih Tzu puppy care is offering a loving, safe home.  It is also important to learn about all of the aspects of the Shih Tzu.   We work hard to provide you with the information you need to know, to be the best Shih Tzu owner possible. Take a bit of time to read the sections which apply to you.

Puppy Care Supplies

What do you need to prepare and offer the best care?

A dog crate -  You will most likely need this for transporting your Shih Tzu puppy home. While we all want to hug & cuddle a puppy, for safety sake, do please not hold the puppy while driving.  You will also be using this for any car rides to the vet and if you choose, for providing your new puppy with a safe & comfortable area to rest and stay until they are properly trained.  It is very important that the crate is large enough for your puppy to stand & turn around.  A crate should be only a temporary element, used only until your puppy is well trained.

Dog Food Dishes and Water  Bowl -  This is not  so simple as one may think.  There are 2 elements. 1: The dog food dish and water bowl must be shallow.  A small puppy can easily bump its head on the edge of a dog dish or bowl that is too deep. 2: The coat of the Shih Tzu can become discolored because of a possible reaction of the dog food to plastic bowl, thus spreading to the puppy's hair as they put their little head inside the bowl.  This can discolor the fur.  It is recommended to use stainless steel dog food dishes and bowls...And to pull any long hairs back into a bow or topknot.

Grooming Supplies -  The coat of a Shih Tzu can quickly become matted and tangled.  Proper grooming is necessary to avoid this.  Your puppy will need to be brushed, combed, shampooed and conditioned.

Toys, Toys & More Toys -  Why do we repeat this?  Because to provide the best Shih Tzu puppy care, the dog must have a good supply of quality dog toys.  There must be dog toys to help them with teething issues and dog toys to help stay busy - this can help with both boredom and separation anxiety issues.

Collars & Leashes -  You will want to make sure to have light weight collars and leashes; remember your Shih Tzu is very small; a heavy collar can do damage. Did you know that not using a dog collar can mean saving your Tzu from a very painful canine health condition? Learn about this and much more here.

Doggie Dental Items - Dental care is for both Shih Tzu puppy care and care throughout your dog's life.  You will need a doggie finger brush, a dog toothbrush and dog toothpaste. It is a lot easier to keep the teeth healthy from day one, as opposed to allowing an issue to develop and then trying to fix it.  It, of course, is less expensive as well.

A Dog Bed -  Your puppy will be too small to sleep in your bed with you...as tempting as this may seem!  A soft, cozy and warm doggie bed is best. See Also:  Shih Tzu Sleeping a Lot |

A Veterinarian -  If you are planning on getting a Shih Tzu puppy,  find an excellent veterinarian first.  If you already have your puppy, find one right away.  The vet who is located closest to you may not be the vet who is best for you and your little puppy.  Do you know what to look for when choosing a Vet?  Your Vet will one day may be making decisionst which affect the very life of your dog.  To learn about this type of very detailed information, click here to learn about the AllShihTzu ebook we have for you.

Dog Food - While a Shih Tzu puppy may not eat very much, it is very important to have a good supply of puppy food on hand.  Only top quality puppy food should be considered.  Until you discover which flavors of dog food your Tzu loves, it is recommended to have at least 1 week's worth of dog food.  Once you learn what healthy dog food your Tzu loves the most, it is suggested to have at least 2 weeks of dog food at home.
